Havelock North

The picturesque village of Havelock North is nestled on the slopes of Te Mata Peak and enjoys stunning views across the plains towards Hastings, Napier and the ranges. The village was opened for settlement by the Provincial Government in 1860 and by the early 1900's a number of architects had left their mark with unique buildings that still give the township its character. Parks and gardens along with a programme of street tree-planting has seen the village develop a distinctly lush feel, contrasting markedly with the rest of the Heretaunga Plains. Havelock North appears a green oasis against the hills and provides a pleasant respite from the browned off pastures of late summer.

The largest public park is the Te Mata Trust Park which was gifted by the Chambers family to the people of Hawke's Bay in 1927 and comprises 240 acres of majestic and prime land overlooking the town. On Te Mata Peak. During the depression, work gangs planted trees and laid paths for what is today a tranquil and beautiful landscaped park. Today a road meanders through the park up to the summit of Te Mata Peak.

Havelock North is the closest settlement to Cape Kidnappers. At Cape Kidnappers you can find the largest mainland gannet colony in the world as well as one of the world's top golf courses. South-east from Havelock North you can find the golden sands of Ocean Beach and Waimarama.

Tempt your tastebuds at one of the many local wineries or if you like to fish, you can head down to the Tukituki River to try your luck for a rainbow trout. Check out the accommodation options for somewhere to stay right on the banks of the river.
